Athenaeum Intercontinental Hotel

The Bottom Line
My two-night stay here in the summer of 2006, as an anonymous, full-paying customer, was nearly perfect. We booked at literally the last minute at the airport through the Anistorion Travel desk, receiving a rate of Euro 150 for two weekend nights, well below posted rates. It's not cheap, but it is an outstanding value. You'll pay as much or more at many hotels for a much less satisfying experience.

Pros
  • Dramatic lobby
  • Well-trained staff accustomed to international standards
  • Eager-to-please housekeepers
  • Extremely comfortable beds may mess with your sightseeing schedule
  • Lavish in-room amenities, big bathrooms
Cons
  • Just outside the central area of downtown but the free downtown shuttle is helpful
  • Not a budget choice; but a summertime weekend last minute room for two cost just Euro 150 per night.
  • Photos on their official website don't do the hotel or rooms justice.
  • No shuttle from the airport.
  • Not a particularly walkable area around the hotel.
Description
  • There's an outdoor swimming pool with poolside drink and food service.
  • Two restaurants - Premiere offers gourmet dining, while Cafe Zoe is more casual.
  • Concierge desk is ready to help with almost any request.
  • Rooms are large, with a desk and sitting area. Internet access is an extra charge.
Guide Review - Athenaeum Intercontinental Hotel
This hotel features a highly trained, attentive staff and has an excellent concierge desk service. At my stay, the reservation booked about thirty minutes before our arrival had not yet shown up in the computer, but this was quickly remedied.

When we arrived in our room, it was not completely made up but reporting this brought a flood of housekeeping staff in moments to put things right. An attempt to tip a housekeeper for bringing extra shampoo was gracefully and firmly refused.

The large room was furnished with lush, comfortable beds that completely ruined plans for the next morning and pushed sightseeing well into the afternoon.
