Keys to Thessaloniki

Often neglected as a destination, since it is located "out of the way" in Northeastern Greece, the thriving university town of Thessaloniki boasts abundant museums, cultural sites, and ancient remains. To understand some of Thessaloniki's significance, visit this informative timeline of its history. Named the 1997 Cultural Capital of Europe, this proud city took the opportunity to create an outstanding presence on the Net to celebrate this special designation. Even average citizens banded together to make Thessaloniki glow with special work teams and a general spring-cleaning of the city. Thessaloniki's intellectual diversity is evident in the variety of museums that call this city home. A few uncommon ones are the Museum of the Cinema, the first film museum in Greece, and the Museum of Photography, as well as The Waterworks Museum of Thessaloniki. Okay, so this visit to a working water pumping station and associated exhibits is not for everyone, but it might be a great break for families who want to be in an environment where nothing is particularly breakable.

More usual museum offerings include the Historical and Art Museum of Thessaloniki, White Tower, located in a 16th century defense tower, the Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki, and the Municipal Museum of Art, which resides in the historic Villa Mordoh.
