Return to Page Two: How to Cope
Information is just coming in on the names of the ships affected and what companies are having to cope with rescheduling around the removed vessels.
Please note: The vessels affected are of Greek registry. Most cruise ship lines plying Greek waters are not using Greek ships.
A Royal Olympic Regional Sales Representative has written to reassure Royal Olympic passengers: "To my knowledge, all of our ships are running. All of the ships must pass the SOLAS inspection each year and a Lloyd's classification survey for their insurance. I think the term "cruise ship" being used here is not the large, ocean passenger vessel we tned to think of - but more of a yacht type of vessel that takes passengers for hire." Note: Lloyd's of London is a major insurer of vessels worldwide, and insists that covered ships meet their own standards of safety and seaworthiness.
However, a vessel which Royal Olympic recently purchased from Renaissance, the World Renaissance, is on the list and has been removed from service for the inspection.
Most of the affected vessels are ferries similar in age to the Samina, but at least nine "cruise ships" and some passenger yachts are among the vessels grounded.
Older ships are much more likely to have been removed from service than newer ships. If your company has boasted about its "brand-new ship", you're probably fine. If that "new" ship was just bought from another cruise line after years of service, it may be one of the ones affected.
