Greek Tragedy at Sea

DATELINE: 09/26/2000

The "Express Samina" passenger ship traveling between Piraeus bound for Paros has sunk. Carrying about 500 passengers, about 150 are known to have reached shore by swimming or via lifeboats. The ferry left Piraeus at 5pm on Tuesday afternoon, heading for Paros and then intending to travel on to Naxos, Ikaria, Samos, and Patmos.

Rescue operations are still underway as of this time; two persons are confirmed dead, among them the port officer who died from a heart attack when informed of the news. The toll is expected to rise. Athens News Agency
