This Fall & Winter in Greece
Dateline: 08/30/99Greece is often ignored in the cooler months, which is a true Greek tragedy. September and October are the best times to visit Greece, with mild weather, lighter crowds, and dropping prices. This year has been an unusually hot one, and the onset of autumn promises cooler termperatures at last.
This past spring, the Kosovo crisis pressed down prices as travel providers scrambled to fill their slots. Now, this fall, another crisis is providing an opportunity to visit this region less expensively.
While the Turkish earthquake left Greece physically untouched, it has reduced traveler interest in the area. Cruises which visit both Greek and Turkish ports are offering some substantial discounts to encourage travelers.
Latest word is that the major tourist attractions survived relatively unscathed - medieval and ancient contractors knew what they were doing.

Here's a repositioning cruise from Royal Olympic, traveling from Piraeus west to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This 21-day late November through mid-December "Exotica" cruise stops at many European ports as well. A nice pre-millenial treat.
In Spring 2000, you can make the return transatlantic trip on the Royal Olympic Primavera Cruise, a 22-day trip back to Greece. This cruise has the option of adding a seven-day cruise of the Greek islands.
Royal Olympic has an especially good "Things to Know Before You Go" page.
