Phaistos
Often overlooked by brief travelers to Crete, who stay in the cramped environs of Heraklion, this grand Minoan site is surrounded by beautiful countryside and glorious vistas, and is never as crowded as Knossos. Nearby is the Venetian-era church of St. George of Phalandra.
Roman Tombs at Matala
The Romans took over Matala in 220 BCE, using it as a port for the important city of Gortyn a few miles inland. Remains of an ancient city are said to be sometimes visible in the bay. Before the Romans modified the caves in the cliffs for use as tombs, they may have been used by locals as housing and places of worship.
Kommos Beach
A favorite with nude sun bathers and sea turtles, this great stretch of sand offers an excellent taverna and a quick hike up the beach takes you to the Minoan archaeological site of ancient Kommos.
Mons Preveli
Famous ancient monastery where revolutionary Abbot Melchissadek Tsouderos raised the Greek flag, beginning the open revolt against the Ottomans.
Phoinike and its Fortress
High above the beautiful town of Loutro, this abandoned fortress from the Venetian period is a popular hiking destination. Around it, the remains of ancient structures from the ancient city of Phoinike are still visible.
Frangocastello
Built in 1317 by the Venetians, whose coat of arms still adorn the walls, this sturdy fortress has a bloody history. It's also the site of one of Crete's most mysterious phenomena - each year on May 17th, shadowy figures of mounted men are said to be reflected on the castle walls.
