The flagship cruise line of Greece, Royal Olympic Cruises, now also known as Royal Olympia Cruises, is preparing to refund a controversial "security fee" that was levied on recent passengers.

The USD3 fee was per passenger, per day, and was added to the shipboard account at the end of the journey for cruises taking place in December, 2002, and January, 2003.

Passengers protested that they were unaware of this fee, which was apparently not well-publicized. As virtually all cruise fees are paid in advance, with the exception of on-board purchases, this came as an unwelcome shock at the end of the cruise when it was time to total up the tab.

Royal Olympic Cruises is now cancelling the fee, and is offering either a refund with a bonus totalling $9 per day, or applying the collected fee and bonus toward future journeys.

In other Royal Olympic news, the line is offering a number of 2003 "foodie" sailings, as part of their new "Seafaring Gourmet" program. Renowned chefs will supervise special menus, demonstrations, and tastings of special wines and artisanal foods. Information on these sailings designed to make cruising even more dangerous to the waistline is available here: Seafaring Gourmet Sailings.

Royal Olympic Cruises can be contacted in the US and Canada at 1-800-872-6400. In the United Kingdom the number is 020 7440 9090. For other offices, and to order brochures, see this page: Royal Olympic/Olympia Contact Information.
