Top Ten "Unknown" Greek Destinations: Do You Have What it Takes To Travel in the Unknown?

When traveling in the "unknown," there's no limit to the number of places to consider. I've made these choices looking for good value, general interest, and, in some cases, relative ease of travel. There are thousands of tiny islands which would be perfect for a blissful stay in solitude, but if they take half a week of ferry hopping and fervent negotiations with fishing boat captains to get there, I've left them off this list. Most of these are destinations in themselves, but a couple are easy day or half-day trips from more popular places.

Off the Beaten Track: Some Tips

If you do go to a more remote destination, remember these tips:

- Allow plenty of time for travel. Connections will be less frequent.
- Make sure you're in the right state of mind for a bit more solitude.
- And make certain you have enough patience and clean underwear to serenely accept a transportation delay - the "next boat" may not be tomorrow or even the next day.
- Be a bit more careful about bringing medications and favorite toiletries -they may not be available for a few days.
- You might actually get some practical use out of that Greek phrasebook, and learning to read the Greek alphabet by sight will help when signs are only in Greek letters. Even an hour invested in this task will pay benefits - see The ABCs of Greek - Literally.
- Have enough cash in Euros to cover your expected expenses and then some. Surprise! Some remote lodgings don't take credit cards, and there may not be an ATM handy - or, if you're like me, your card has mysteriously erased itself overnight.
