Top Ten "Unknown" Greek Destinations: #10 - Thessaloniki
Greece's second largest city shouldn't be on anyone's unknown list. To the Greeks, it's what Athens should be, and some of them feel that if they could move the Acropolis and Parthenon north, they would then grace the true modern cultural capital of Greece. A university city, the energy is lively, the streets clean and beautiful, entertainment sophisticated, and the weather mild in the summer but much colder in the winter than in Athens. Plus, it's a good jumping-off point to explore Mount Olympus and the archaeological remains of Dion, or to drop down to Mount Athos (if you're male - females are not allowed on the monastic peninsula). An excellent highway runs from Athens to Thessaloniki - rent a car and hit the road.
