Why You Should Go:
Even some Greeks wish Thessaloniki was the capital. It doesn't have the Acropolis, but it's a very pleasant, well-designed city, rich in culture, calmer and prettier than Athens. Thessaloniki University keeps the city active and cutting-edge.

Don't Miss Seeing:
The tombs at Vergina and the sacred mountain of the Olympians, Mount Olympus, can be reached from Thessaloniki. Inside the city, check out the White Tower. Male and monastically inclined? You may be able to get a permit to visit Mount Athos. Women can take a boat around part of the peninsula.
Travel Tip:
A good road connects Athens and Thessaloniki. If you're brave enough to drive on your own in Greece, this is not a bad place, relatively speaking, to do it.
