On Carpathos (Karpathos) the self-named "Nutty Birdwatcher" shares pictures of a birding and honeymoon trip on the Dodecanese island in September, 1999. Click here to get a glimpse of that fabled Greek light and get a sense of the likely weather during the month.
The Athens or Hellenic Festival and Epidaurus festival both continue through mid-September. The evenings, while still pleasant, may be a bit chilly so bundle up for any outdoor theater productions. (Taking an extra cushion is never a bad idea, either - ancient marble can be hard!)
The film world descends on Athens for the 9th annual Athens International Film Festival. This year, the festival again focuses on American independent film along with many other topics. For the first time, a panel composed of young adult filmgoers will be presenting the "Golden Athena" award to the most praiseworthy film. Considered to be one of the world's most eclectic film festivals, this event will offer something for everyone, from maintstream foreign commercial successes to undiscovered gems. The Music and Film section presents "Wattstax", a look at the so-called "Black Woodstock" in a fascinating musical documentary. Greeks of the Diaspora, another division of the festival, presents "Sightseer" about the experiences of a Greek observer in New York after 9/11.
An unusual exhibit on the island of Naxos combines public art, environmental awareness, and a rich slate of music, drama, and dance performances. The Pyramids of Naxos runs from September 6th through the 28th. Naxos is often overlooked as a destination and this lovely island deserves some more attention.
