Travel for All the Wrong Reasons
Afraid to travel to Greece? Be afraid not to!

By , About.com Guide

Around the world, travel is down from several years ago. Some of it is economic, but the biggest culprit is fear. Okay. Taking the side of the pessimists, hear me out. If you're fearful, here's why you should travel. Right now. The Latin says it best: Carpe diem. More to the point, Carpe suitcasem! (Rough translation: seize the day, - and seize the suitcase.)

The world may end tomorrow.
It's unlikely, but can we rule it out? Sitting on a cloud in heaven, or in the afterlife imagery of your choice, do you really want to be sighing, "Oh, if I'd only seen the Acropolis by moonlight!" Why mess up your happy eternity with these completely avoidable regrets? And if you believe that nothing but an endless darkness awaits, isn't that still more reason to live fully while you can?

Your world may end tomorrow.
Things happen. Sometimes bad things happen. Downturns in health, finances, or the physical abilities of those you care about may change your travel plans forever. If you can go now, go now.

The world may change tomorrow
Events may make travel difficult or virtually impossible. Or progress may strike: that beautiful cove may become polluted; that terrific mountainside view may grow timeshare units.

Terrorists May Strike
True. They most likely will, somewhere, someplace, somehow. My home base is in a city that's has a heavy military presence and three of the 9/11 terrorists lived here for several years, during which time they had the leisure to presumably check out all the local targets in detail. Tell me: am I safer today at home or kayaking off the beach at Matala, Crete?

The Plane May Crash
Planes do crash. So do cars, trains, trams, trolleys, metro lines, shuttle buses, bicycles, skateboards, motorcycles, and scooters. Perhaps you'd be on one of those at the wrong moment when you should have been on the plane to your fantastic destination.

I can't go now - they need me at work.
And they'll realize they need you even more when you're gone. When you get back it could be a perfect time to negotiate a raise - to finance more vacations.

If I take my vacation time, I might get fired
And you might get fired anyway, or laid off, and you'll be even more stressed about it because you didn't take your vacation to recharge. Worst case scenario: A humane manager or "Human Resources" person deciding layoffs might figure the person with the most unused vacation time on the books will be better off for longer than Three-Day Weekend Sally who has no vacation time to cash out. Why risk it? Take that vacation!

It's too expensive
Prices will only go up and up as time goes on. Your travel is probably cheaper this year than next. Go now! You'll save money.

The exchange rate is terrible right now
And it may be even worse next year. I don't think the blissful days of a Euro costing just $0.95 US are coming back anytime soon.

I might get sick from some strange new disease
And you might get sick back home from some strange new disease. Maybe you'll avoid getting sick because you were out of town at the right moment, and that sneeze, microbe, or mosquito with your name on it had to settle for another victim.

These reasons all apply worldwide, but hey, I'm the Greece Guide. I always say, if you're going to travel, go to Greece! Kalo taxidi! A beautiful journey to you!)

Still nervous? Maybe considering Travel Insurance will help.
