The official rental rates for private homes during the Olympic Games in 2004 have been finalized.

Since most of the best hotel rooms are already set aside for Olympic participants and sponsors, much of the slack is expected to be taken up by private Greek individuals offering their homes up for rent during the Games.

These rates only apply to those registering through the official offices. While other rentals are technically illegal, they are bound to be available at whatever prices the market will bear.

The rates have been set for six-night periods and are per person. The least expensive starts at 840 Euros and rises from there to a maximum of 1200. However, that's not the end of it. Places near the Athens Olympic venues will be twenty percent more, and certain deluxe features will cost an additional ten percent. A separate and as yet undefined "luxury" class will cover villas and special apartments; prices for those have not yet been set.

While the term "private home" conjures up images of free standing family homes, many of the accommodations offered will actually be in apartment buildings.

But these officially recognized dwellings carry some bonuses, at least in theory. They are supposed to include transportation to and from the airport, an emergency hotline, maid service every three days, and liability insurance.
