Outside of towns and cities: About 4 per ten kilometers or about 6 miles. The meter will be set on "2" in this situation.
Late/Early Trips: Between midnight and 5am, expect to pay at the "2" rate. The meter should be set to "1", the cheaper rate of about 2 per ten kilometers, during the hours of 5am to midnight.
Athens and the major cities all have plenty of taxis. But taxis on islands are rarer creatures who usually appear and disappear with the arrival of the ferries. Usually, a shopkeeper can be found who knows the magic number to call to summon one of them back. As the number of cell phones in use in Greece is about to overtake the population of about ten million, even in rural areas drivers can be tracked down.
