Top Ten Greek Destinations: #1 - Athens - The Acropolis

Say what you like (or don't like!) about Athens, no one's trip to Greece can be complete without a visit to its supreme symbol, the outcropping of rock called the Acropolis, crowned with Athena's sacred temple, the Parthenon.

It looks great all day, but visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds. Skip the Sound and Light show - cold in temperature and corny in tone. New pedestrian pathways make it easy to visit via the Athens Metro.

Once you have walked through the ceremonial Propylion, the natural instinct is to whip out the camera and start taking pictures of the Parthenon. It's usually crowded and the Acropolis guards are ready to pounce on anyone getting too close to the barrier cords for the sake of a picture. (Crossing that barrier will result in a personal escort off of the sacred mount.) Simply keep walking forward with the Parthenon on your right - when you get to the opposite side of the temple, you'll actually have a much better shot. And in recent years, it is usually scaffolding-free, while the other end of the Parthenon seems to be perpetually encumbered with restoration machinery. You'll also have the opportunity for some great shots of Athens from the Acropolis.
