Most travelers to Greece will never need them, but for those who do, the Greek Tourist Police can be guardian angels. Though I've seen many a traveler unconsciously straighten up when passing one of the Tourist Police Stations, please relax. The Greek Tourist Police force is there to help travelers, not arrest them.

Greek Tourist police probably spend most of their time simply giving out directions, but if you are the victim of any sort of minor scam or dispute in Greece, these uniformed officers are the first line of defense. Overcharged by a cabbie? Report it here. Had a dinner check that just didn't add up? Confused by charges on your hotel bill? They're here to help.

The Tourist Police officers receive special training in dealing with visitors and all of them speak several languages.

Greek Tourist Police offices are located throughout Greece wherever there are enough travelers to warrant their presence. Many offices operate year-round, but some are seasonal. They are usually located in the heart of the city.

In Greece, you can always reach a Greek Tourist Police representative by dialing 171. You will be connected with an operator who speaks several languages and will be able to direct your call.
