Wildflowers of Greece - Resources

By deTraci Regula, About.com Guide

Greek wildflowers are suffering from the infusion of tourists and the accompanying development, and an increasing awareness of their medicinal properties which is unfortunately not accompanied by an increasing awareness of their preciousness. When you are fortunate enough to find these blossoms, please refrain from picking them. The seed that might have formed on that flower could mean the difference between our children seeing them on their first visit to Greece, or simply trying to imagine them where once they grew.

Though hard to find, Flowers of Greece and the Aegean by Anthony Huxley and William Taylor (Hogarth Press) is worth a special search. H. Baumann's Greek Wild Flowers and Plant Lore in Ancient Greece is more of a specialist text, but filled with information. In Greece, booklets to keep an eye out for are George Sfikas' "Wildflowers of Greece" and its companion volume, "Medicinal Plants of Greece", both published by the Efstathiadis group. The bright yellow title bar with red lettering above pretty photos of flowers is as easy to spot as a fall crocus against the green grass meadows of Greece.
