Island of the Week
Leros

By , About.com Guide

Welcome to the mountainous island of Leros, a treasure of the Dodecanese island group and a sacred site of the divine huntress Artemis in ancient times. Now this beautiful island, rich in remains and relics from all periods, from the classical past to the Byzantine period, the Crusades, and the Turkish Occupation, offers plenty of sights and museums to keep the visitor occupied.

Agia Marina, the capital, is crowned by a Franco-Byzantine fortress. Nearby, at Platinos, there is one of the largest natural ports in the Aegean, with full yachting and watersports facilities.

Perhaps the memory of Artemis and her independent priestesses lingers on in this rough island. Unlike most islands, and most of Greece, property is held primarily by women, who pass it on in turn to their daughters.

While not exactly an "undiscovered" island, Leros is not as crowded as many others, and visitors can count on a relaxing stay. The hotels on Leros tend to be "C" and "D" class but most offer gorgeous views and a true sense of getting away from it all. During the first two weeks of August, a traditional athletic competition, the "Alindia", brings visitors to the island.

And physicians, take note - the Lerians also celebrate a simultaneous two-week festival called the Boulafenteia, in honour of the Lerian heart surgeon Boulafentis.

Leros can be reached by air from Athens or by ferry from Piraeus, and by hydrofoil or boat from some of the larger nearby islands such as Kos and Rhodes. These arrangements are generally best made through an agent in Athens or on Leros (see below), or portside at Kos or Rhodes, but here are the basic contact numbers for the airlines and port authorities.
