Agistri and Its Nude Beaches
Tourists, Assassins Unwittingly Shared Sand

By , About.com Guide

The small island of Agistri (sometimes spelled Angistri) is a favorite secret among Athenians and the savvy, primarily British tourists who frequent the island, just an hour trip from the mainland.

Where to Stay on Agistri

Many foreign visitors end up at the Agistri Club Hotel, known for its friendly bar.

Agistri is Still a Bargain

The island is one of the most reasonably-priced in Greece, still primarily serving as an indulgent island getaway for working-class Greeks from the mainland. Its beaches are popular with campers and nudists, and, this time, a fugitive from justice.

The Unofficial Official Nude Beach

While nude beaches are technically illegal in Greece, more remote stretches of sand are nonetheless often designated as such. Halikadha has that "official" distinction on Agistri; while it is not clear which section of Agistri's beaches Koufontinas chose to occupy, Halikadha's difficult access path and cave may have made it an ideal refuge.

Talk About Hiding in Plain Sight....

In 2002, the then little-known island of Agistri found itself the center of attention after it was revealed that Greece's most wanted terror suspect, Dimitris Koufontinas, just spent a month hiding out on its nude beach prior to turning himself in to authorities.

Koufontinas is believed to have been the primary assassin for the November 17 terrorist group responsible for many killings and bombings over the past 27 years. For decades, no arrests were made against this group, but an injury to one member during an attempted bombing in June of 2001 set off a spate of arrests. Greek authorities claim that the group is now crippled.

Ultimately, Koufontinas turned himself in to authorities in Athens, where he faced numerous charges related to at least 17 deaths.

Meanwhile, Greek authorities are questioned other campers and residents on Agistri to find out if they had contact with "Lucas", the alias used by Koufontinas.

Getting to Agistri

During the high season there is daily service to Agistri from Hellenic Seaways. Agistri can also be reached from the nearby island of Aegina.
