The taverna on top of the cliffs offers a splendid view and some unique dishes, including an "ancient salad" made of beans and served with olive oil and vinegar, and a "tako" - Mexican food aficionados beware, the Cretan tako is a crusty bread topped with raw tomato and feta cheese, far closer to an Italian bruschetta than to anything resembling a Mexican taco.
Surprisingly enough, avocados were on the menu; with weather similar to California, where most of the world's avocados are grown, Crete is beginning to produce the green fruit in increasing numbers.
Big notebooks filled with photographs of past customers make for amusing browsing while waiting for your order.
Below, hardy souls continue to bare all despite a sign posted by the taverna to please keep your clothing on. The warm, smooth marble rocks are so far irresistible to naturists, but the presence of rentable sunbeds and umbrellas is never a good sign for nude beaches. Out of sight of the taverna there are still a few private spots where naturist life goes on.
Getting to Marmara
Marmara Beach is reachable by water or on foot via the Aradena Gorge or by following part of the E4 footpath west from Loutro. I haven't walked that specific section of the E4, but in October 2003 I found the adjacent section from Loutro to Chora Sfakia to be a scramble for my still-developing hiking skills. If you walk down the Gorge, make sure you have booked a room overnight or have made arrangements to be picked up at the beach. There is no regularly-scheduled transportation available.
