The monastic republic of Mount Athos in Northern Greece is one of the most fascinating peninsulas in the world - and though I'll never set foot on it as women are forbidden to - it's still a compelling destination. (And there is the "boat ride around the coast" option.) This holiday season, it's in the news in a couple of ways - CBS repeated its special on the area, and Greek authorities placed the abbot of one monastery under "house arrest" as part of an investigation into a land-swap deal with the government which may have illegally benefited the Vatopedi monastery.
