Port town of Gythion or Gythio on the coast of the Peloponnese, GreeceI love to come across a cruise or tour which takes a different approach to Greece and the Greek Islands, and this new trip from Variety Cruises does just that. It combines plenty of Ancient Greece with the slightly more modern Byzantine era, making this a voyage through time and cultures.

Subtitled "Mythical Meanderings", the cruise starts and ends in Athens and focuses on the Peloponnese and southerwestern portion of mainland Greece, making this an ideal candidate to combine with your own more independent explorations of the rest of Greece and the Greek islands.

The trip is scheduled for departures from February 2012 through mid-spring 2012, making it an ideal way to see some of Greece in late winter and early spring. Fares start at about $1,071 per person, per week. The itinerary includes Epidaurus, Nafplion, Olympia, the often-missed Byzantine city of Mystras, charming Gythion and the wild Mani area of the Peloponnese - plus Itea/Delphi.
