Feast of the Dormition in Greece

Friday August 14, 2009
If you're in Greece right now, don't assume anything is open on the festival date of August 15th, when the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Feast of the Dormition is observed. This is a major holiday for the Greeks, observing the day when the Virgin Mary is believed to have ascended into heaven, and they return home in droves to spend time with their families.

On the day itself, archaeological sites and museums will be closed along with support businesses such as banks, many shops, and post offices and other government offices.

Just realized you should send greetings to someone in Greece (or anywhere) for the holiday? Check out these e-Icon cards, courtesy of the Greek Orthodox Church of America.
