Olympic Airlines Airmiles - If You Have Them, Redeem Them Now!

Friday July 10, 2009
If you travel much to Greece, chances are you signed up at some point for Icarus, the frequent-flyer miles program for Olympic Airlines.

With the sale to MIG going through by the end of September, Olympic Airlines is asking all of its frequent-flyer club members to redeem their miles. After September 30th, the miles and tickets bought with them will no longer be valid. Here's the letter I received:

"As you may be aware, Olympic Airlines will enter into liquidation and a new privately owned Airline Olympic Air will be established.

Consequently, we would like to inform you that the accumulated miles of Icarus Program of Olympic Airlines must be redeemed for domestic and international flights until the September 30th of 2009*.

To request an award ticket please contact by e-mail:
Olympicairlines.telephone.sales@olympicairlines.gr
or fax:
0030-210-96 66 244 (US callers use 011-30-210-96-66-244)
*All flights must have been completed until the 30th of September 2009

The ICARUS FREQUENT FLYER PROGRAM will be terminated on 30th of September 2009.

Taking the opportunity we would like to express our appreciation for your continuous support during all those years.

Sincerely,
Olympic Airlines

As problematic as travel with Olympic has sometimes been for all of us traveling to Greece, I can't help but feel a pang now that it is really, really changing. Sentimental, I know! Here's to a bright future for Olympic Air.

I’ve been trying for weeks to use my points without luck. Olympic Airlines does not respond.

I timed my JFK-ATH travel so that I would have one more flight I could take. I have been trying to book this one for over a week… Let’s hope. I have been loyal to OA for many years. I sure don’t want the good bye to be a sour one.. Keeping the faith that Icarus will come through!

Well here we are nearing the end of September. We’ve also been loyal supporters of Olympic through thick and thin and we booked my ticket Johannesburg to Athens and on to Mykonos 30th May returning Sept 30th. My husband’s was paid for. Now we’re sitting in Mykonos. The 30th Sept flight has been cancelled (no one called us, we heard a rumour). We were offered a routing via Dubai on Oct. 4th but need to be home by Sept. 30th so our only option is Sept. 23rd, cutting our vacation by a week. However now the flight I booked from JHB to CapeTown for R1800 can’t be changed and it’s the start of school holidays so all the airlines are charging R2,500. for a 1 way ticket!!! Olympic won’t compensate us for that because they say our departure point is JHB. And get this!!!! — they say they can’t offer me the Emerites option because I’m here on points – points they told us to use before 30th Sept. What a bunch! And what a way for the new airline to start. If they don’t see us right, we will NEVER EVER give them our business again, and we fly here twice a year.

Today the Olympic staff at the Mykonos didn’t even know it had been cancelled.

I am very disappointed with Olympic!!he flight from Kefalnia to Athens on Sept.30,2009 was cancelled & we were obliged to pay double the price with Aegean Airlines, with no consideration or reimbursement!!What an airline!
