Riots Continue in Athens

Sunday December 14, 2008
While many were hoping for a weekend off from the clashes between police and protesters, the unrest continued in Athens on Saturday. Police were allegedly running out of tear gas, and some protesters were harassing police by aiming laser pointers at them. Passion over the incident that sparked the riots, the shooting death of a 15 year-old boy, seems to be giving way to a desire to try and force a change in government.

What can we expect this week? Another major rally is scheduled for Monday, and it is unlikely that this will all subside in the next few days. As I recommended before, if you are traveling in Greece, avoid booking downtown hotels in Athens and concentrate your sightseeing in the countryside and on the Greek islands. While there have been scattered protests throughout the country, the majority of major problems have been in the key cities of Athens and Thessaloniki.

Because Greek authorities cannot stop the spoiled brats from rioting and wreaking havoc on civil society, perhaps its high time that Turkey stepped in! Let’s see then what these spoiled brats are capable of aside from ruining their own country - or perhaps they’d just run away to the nearest exit (neigboring countries) with their tails tucked between their legs (like a frightened dog)!
