Tiny Kastellorizo "hosts" international incident

Wednesday November 19, 2008

Prime Minister of Greece Dora Bakoyannis has protested to the governments of both Turkey and Norway, and vessels from the Hellenic Navy have been sent to the area.

Kastellorizo lies very close to the Turkish coast and territorial water disputes are common around the coast-hugging Greek islands off of Turkey.

What does this standoff mean for travelers in Greece? Past incidents suggest that it may herald a period of stickier visa requirements for traveling between Turkey and Greece, a process which in recent years has been simplified with such things as the "Friendship Train" between Istanbul and Thessaloniki.
