Greece to Unveil a New Holiday
Wednesday November 12, 2008
Greece has ordered up a new holiday to celebrate the love of Greece and Greek culture in honor of the death anniversary of the famed British poet, Lord Byron. Byron was a great lover of Greece and died of pneumonia at Messolonghi in April 23rd, 1833, the day to be commemorated. he had come to Greece to join in the fight for freedom against the Ottoman Empire.
Not incidentally to his new recognition by the Greek government, Byron was also appalled at the removal of the Parthenon Marbles by Elgin, and wrote a scathing poem against the theft called The Curse of Minerva, where the goddess Athena bewails the loss of the adornments to her Parthenon.
