Greek Travel Tip: Please Don't Call Grandma a Squid

Wednesday September 17, 2008
I hear it every time I'm in Greece - a well-meaning tourist inadvertently calling an aged Greek woman a squid (or a close maritime equivalent). Here's how you can avoid this all-too-common tourist mistake!

You can also expand your vocabulary - safely - with a few more words in Greek. And if you're driving in Greece, you'll never regret learning the Greek alphabet to help you navigate the roads of Greece. While most major roads and destinations are posted in English as well, there will always be a few that are only in Greek. You can even practice with my photo gallery of Greek Signs.

Haha!!! Hi deTraci, we’ve just come back from Athens/Peloponnese/Crete & John managed to ask for ‘psoli’ in the shop instead of ‘psomi’. Psomi=bread. Psoli=willy(penis). He got the 2 mixed up because I told him a story about a friend of mine who also got them mixed up….then he couldn’t remember which one was bread!

Kety was wondering how you are & if/when you are in Xania/Crete would love to see you - she’s retired now.
