On this day in Greece - June 23rd

Monday June 23, 2008
At Aliki Beach on the Greek island of Paros locals celebrate St. John's Day Eve (Agios Ioannis) with the Klidonas, an ancient custom of leaping over bonfires made from May Day wreaths.

Unmarried women also take the opportunity to dream of seeing the image of the person they will marry, by eating pies made with some of the ashes from the bonfire or by filling up a pot with "still water" (well water) from several sources.

Of course, these days it's said to be all done in fun - but it's still done! Similar customs are celebrated throughout Greece, though the dates may vary depending on the local traditions.

With a little advance planning, almost any trip to Greece can include a local festival or two. Check my list of some of the many holidays, festivals, Name Days and other special events in Greece, and see what's happening during your trip.
