Visiting Akrotiri - Not
Friday June 20, 2008
Akrotiri, the once-buried Minoan-era city on the island of Santorini, will remain closed to the public for at least the next two years. The site was closed in 2005 after a British tourist was killed when part of the new roof covering the site collapsed. It was originally expected to reopen in 2007, and recent projections suggested it would be open by the fall of 2008.
However, visitors can console themselves with the excellent Museum of Prehistoric Thira and a visit to the large, engaging site of Roman-era Thira built about 1500 years after Akrotiri was destroyed.
