Greek Cruise Ships Participating in Evacuation? Not yet.

Monday July 17, 2006
CNN has reported in a bottom-screen crawl that a "Greek" cruise ship, the Orient Queen, has been hired by the U.S. Government to participate in evacuation efforts for U.S. citizens in Beirut, Lebanon. However, this ship is not Greek, is most recently registered in Panama, and is currently part of the Lebanon-based Abou Merhic Cruises fleet. Its normal schedule includes stops at Cyprus and the Greek island of Rhodes, but this ship's participation in evacuation efforts should have no effect on any other scheduled cruises in the Greek islands, most of which are hundreds of miles away from the conflict.
