"Summer Lovers" Rejoice In Greece

Wednesday June 21, 2006
Cliffs at MatalaYes, that's also the title of the perky early-1980s movie shot in Greece. But these summer lovers are museum junkies and archeology fans - most Greek archaeological sites and museums are open from 8am to 7:30pm every day. These special hours will generally not be the ones given in print guides, most websites, or even daily newspapers who pull their information from a database.

So check locally before you decide it's too late to visit that last site of the day. The Greek Ministry of Culture website gives phone numbers and contact information for every museum, monument, and archaeological site in Greece, including the independent ones.

Note: no matter what the official word is, poorly-visited sites may not always be keeping these extended hours. And these hours only apply to official museums; many museums in Greece are operated by private groups and will not be affected.

Traveling in fall? The extended "Summer" hours are projected to last until October 31st this year.
