Feast of St. Basil the Great,

Sunday January 1, 2006
Greece in January gets off to a sacred start with January 1st, the Feast of St. Basil the Great, an early founder of the Greek Orthodox Church. While there are many customs associated with this day, most Greeks especially enjoy the special feast day cake, the vassilopita[, which has a coin concealed inside of it. Whoever gets the piece with the coin has good luck for the rest of the year. [p]Want to try your own luck at baking one? Nancy Gaifyllia at the Greek Food website can guide you through her favorite vassilopita recipe.
