Greece in January

Sunday January 1, 2006
People often ask me if they should go to Greece in the winter months. I tell them that literally millions of people are traveling in Greece during the winter - it's just that the majority of them are Greeks who live there year-round. Life goes on, and while it may not be the best time for beachhopping, it can still be a rich experience with very low prices and very light crowds at the monuments.

The main drawbacks? The most touristy spots are closed - if this is in fact a drawback for you - and Greek winter weather is not as wonderfully reliable as it is in spring, summer, and fall, though it is milder than most countries farther north.

Sun-starved? The Greek islands can provide some glistening cool but sunny days. Best winter island bets? Crete, Corfu, and Rhodes - all relatively big islands with flights through the winter.
