Battle Erupts over Tomb of Odysseus

Saturday October 29, 2005
The island of Ithaca has long benefited from its identification with the historic Ithaca recounted in Homer's Odyssey.

But now, the town of Poros on Kefallonia is claiming that new archaeological discoveries prove that Poros is the "real" site of Ithaca, complete with the apparent ruins of Odysseus' tomb. So just where should travelers go on their own odysseys?

(1) Bill says:

This could be a fantastic find (for some). Homer talks of a ‘cave of nymphs’ some 2 day walk from Ithaca. This could be ‘The Melissani Lake’ 15k up the coast from Poros. Artifacts found here include plates and a figurine of the god pan surrounded by nymphs, discovered by a S Marinos in 1962.
I wouldn’t like the job of rewriting the history books though.
