Earthquakes Jolt Greece

Tuesday October 18, 2005
As if bird flu is not enough trouble for Greece to handle this week, several powerful earthquakes have struck Greece since Monday, with the most recent epicenter located in the sea south of the Ionian island of Zakynthos along Greece's western coast.

According to Reuters, no injuries or damage have been reported for the Zakynthos earthquake.

The Zakynthos quake follows a strong pair of quakes which struck near Samos on Monday. While Greece has not reported any damage or injuries from the Samos quake, at least 30 people were injured in nearby Turkey which was also affected by the tremor.

The Ionian islands are popular tourist and yachting destinations, and Zakynthos itself is an important nesting base for the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtles.
