Update on the Helios Plane Crash near Athens

Tuesday August 16, 2005
Investigators are examining the wreckage of the Helios Airways jet which crashed near Athens on Sunday, killing all 121 persons on board. While a decompression problem seems likely to have played a role in the tragedy, the actual cause of the crash is still unclear.

A Greek man has been arrested for making a false report of receiving a text message from a cousin on the doomed airplane - neither the message nor the cousin existed. And reports that nearly half of the passengers were children were not correct, though there were a number of children traveling with their families to Greece for the Assumption holiday.

Cypriot police have raided the offices of Helios Airways, apparently acting on rumors that the plane had experienced problems with its air conditioning system prior to Sunday's crash.
