Happy St. Nikolaos Day

Sunday December 5, 2004
In Greece, December 6th, St. Nikolaos Day, is the primary gift-giving holiday in December, in memory of this Greek saint who provided dowries to poor women among many other good acts. In recent years, Christmas has caught up as a day for giving and receiving gifts. But since this possible Santa prototype is also the patron saint of seafarers, nothing will ever displace St. Nikolaos in the hearts of Greeks, and his day starts the holiday season.

Have Greek friends you'd like to remember? Send a free electronic "iconogram" to mark the occasion, or to commemorate any other Greek holiday or feast day.
