A Marathon Ride to Schinias

Wednesday August 25, 2004
ATHENS, Greece - Today found me up before dawn to begin the trek to Schinias to watch several semi-final contests in canoe and flatwater kayak racing. Though Schinias is some distance from Athens, near the famed plains of Marathon, the Olympics transit system worked beautifully, covering the entire distance in about ninety minutes from my start in far-off Piraeus.

The Women's Quad race was one of several photo finishes, as the USA team was narrowly edged out by less than three-hundredths of a second, losing its chance at the finals. For more results, see the Canoe Flatwater Racing Results page at the Athens 2004 website.
