Heraklion Goes Wild

Thursday July 1, 2004
The Cretan city of Heraklion and the rest of Greece is celebrating the unexpected last-minute Greek victory over the Czech Republic football (soccer) team.

For a taste of the vigorous delight the Greeks are feeling for this triumph, check out Yannis Samatas' Photos and Video. Sports fans can find details of the amazing Greek victory at Fox News.

Traveling in Greece right now? Expect the final game on Sunday to bring the country to a standstill and if the Greeks win, be braced for a country-wide euphoria. While major transportation will carry on, I wouldn't be surprised if it is awfully hard to get a taxi during and after the game. Also, expect concert and other entertainment schedules to be affected, with venues either delaying or moving up start times for their events; some may be cancelled entirely as the entire country sits down in front of the taverna's television set or flocks to the huge screens many towns are putting up in the squares.

And the delight isn't limited to Greece - cities worldwide with big Greek expatriate populations are also erupting with spontaneous celebrations.

Congratulations to the Greek team!
