Travel News from Greece

Thursday November 20, 2003
If you're traveling in Greece toward the end of November, the latest strike will affect tour buses. From November 26th-29th, these vehicles will be idle. All other forms of public transportation will continue to operate. Update: This strike has been cancelled. Tour buses will be operating.

As I've mentioned here before, fall is strike season in Greece - tourism-related industries such as taxi drivers tend to wait until most of the tourists have gone home to make their points and renegotiate their government-dictated contracts, without affecting too many people and losing too much income. However, it can be highly inconvenient if you are traveling outside the high season.

In other news, the Heraklion International Airport, also called Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, will be replaced by a shiny new one. Construction will start in 2005. While the existing airport is admittedly small, it's also been a relatively simple one to navigate and a haven for arriving and departing travelers. The new airport will be farther outside of Heraklion itself, at Kasteli.
