Fuel Shortages May Affect Travelers in Greece

Wednesday July 28, 2010
Driving in Greece may be even more challenging than usual this month.

strike by truckers who carry fuel is causing shortages in some parts of Greece as talks between the government and the drivers break down.

If you are planning on driving yourself in Greece, you may find it difficult to find an open gas station. Rural areas are even more likely to be affected, but metropolitan gas stations are also be facing shortages. If you must rent a car, paying a premium for one with a full tank may be your best bet, especially if you are mainly planning trips within the range of a tank full of gas.

Clash of the Titans Out on DVD

Tuesday July 27, 2010

The modern remake of the Ray Harryhausen classic "Clash of the Titans" comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray on July 27th. While the movie was not shot in Greece, it's full of Greek gods and goddesses, though some of the Olympians got their roles reduced to that of silent extras living in what looked to be a rather dull Mount Olympus. (And personally, I think roguish Zeus would go for a more stylish beard instead of one strongly resembling a flokati rug hanging from his chin.)

Aegean Airlines is offering low prices on a limited number of seats for flights between Athens and London for fall 2010. Seats must be booked by Monday, July 26th for travel between October 1st and December 16th, 2010.

Aegean Airlines recently became part of the international Star Alliance, making the sharing of airmiles and the transfer of baggage easier for passengers flying on the related airlines. Aegean is also slated to join with Olympic Airlines but that is still awaiting various approvals; it was originally expected to be in place by fall 2010 but it now looks as if it will be delayed into early 2011.

British Travel Company Collapse Strands Travelers

Saturday July 17, 2010

Goldtrail, a UK-based travel company which uses Viking Airlines, has ceased operations, leaving thousands of British tourists scrambling and disappointing hotels in Greece that were expecting to be full of Goldtrail groups. The Daily Telegraph reports that groups comprising up to 16,000 tourists in Turkey and Greece were affected. The Guardian states that Goldtrail apparently informed hotels that they would not be reimbursing suppliers and that they should try to get the tourists, who had prepaid Goldtrail for their vacations, to pay for their rooms. Most of the affected travelers are in Turkey, but several thousand are in Greece, which was just added as a Goldtrail destination last year.

Goldtrail has disabled most of its website, but has posted these numbers for affected travelers.
